Plant hormones: More than one way to detect ethylene

چکیده

Plants use the gas ethylene (C2H4) as a signaling molecule for regulating a variety of developmental processes, including fruit and flower senescence, sex determination in some monoecious species, cell elongation and pathogen responses [1]. The final reactions of the ethylene biosynthetic pathway have been elucidated [2], and information on its signaling apparatus is beginning to emerge [3,4]. Molecular genetic analysis of the ethylene signaling pathway in Arabidopsis revealed that plants sense ethylene by a protein kinase cascade [3,4]. This revelation came from the cloning of CTR1 and ETR1, two key genes in the pathway. CTR1 mutations confer a constitutive ethylene response, whereas ETR1 mutations confer ethylene insensitivity. Ecker and colleagues [5] first cloned CTR1, which encodes a putative Raf-like serine/threonine protein kinase [5]. Soon after, Meyerowitz and colleagues [6] cloned ETR1, which encodes a putative histidine protein kinase similar to prokaryotic ‘two-component’ sensors (Fig. 1).

Plant hormones

Plant hormones have been studied for more than a century because they have been heavily implicated in the control of plant growth and development. For many years, they have been considered to fall into five classes: auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acid and ethylene. More recently, a variety of additional classes such as brassinosteroids have been added and it seems likely that more w...

Comparison of Plant Growth Regulators and Exogenous Ethylene Effects on Two Types of Cut Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.)

The main object of this study is to investigate the effect of plant growth regulators on the prolongation of vase life of two kinds of cut carnation under normal and ethylene. Carnation is one of the most popular flowers that has a short life due to its sensitivity to ethylene. Also, the effect of plant growth regulators on several physiological traits under ethylene stress and normal condition...

Ethylene-responsive miRNAs in roots of Medicago truncatula identified by high-throughput sequencing at whole genome level.

Ethylene is one of the classical plant hormones with a diverse function in plant growth and development. Root elongation is sensitive to ethylene such that treatments with ethylene and the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) inhibit root growth. MicroRNA as one type of endogenous, non-coding small RNAs, plays an important role in regulation of plant growth, developmen...

Fruit age and changes in abscisic Acid content, ethylene production, and abscission rate of cotton fruits.

The relationships of fruit age, abscisic acid (ABA) concentration, ethylene evolution, and abscission rates were studied in an effort to determine why cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., cv. Deltapine 16) fruits rarely abscise more than 15 days after anthesis. Because abscission of cotton fruits is increased by conditions that limit photosynthesis, greenhouse-grown plants with fruits of various ages...

The role of plant growth regulators in enhancing crop yield under saline conditions: from theory to practice

Intensified salinization of water and soil resources has promoted interest for research and approaches of improving crop yield under saline conditions. Reviewing the literature showed that the records on understanding of different aspects of salt stress and enhanced salinity tolerance in the world goes back to more than a century. Different approaches have been suggested to increase crop yield ...
